Modifying Your Vehicle

So you just bought a new car. You’re excited about a new car: the seats, the material of the steering wheel, the gauge cluster with all the colorful bits of information you’ll ever need. Then it hits you; you realize, there are many cars exactly like yours. You didn’t notice the car clones before, but once you’ve become comfortable behind the wheel of your new ride, it seems like your car multiplied like a gremlin. Thus, you feel the need to personalize your car. You want to stand out from the rest. Your practical side says, “it’s just transportation; your car is just a tool to get you places.” Nonetheless, after giving in to your fun side, you look into modifying your car.

One of the first things people do when personalizing their vehicle is applying stickers to their car. Stickers represent a side of you that you want to communicate while driving. Maybe your sticker states a common slang, a political affiliation, or something with humor. Whatever it is, you just want your car to be more personal. A few weeks go by after adding some stickers. You still want more. Before we go deeper down the rabbit hole of modifications, I need to address a few major points: the warranty, research, and to buy the best.

Warranty

The first point you want to consider before modifying your car is to make sure your modifications do not void your vehicle’s warranty. You don’t want to modify your car in such a way that when something goes wrong, your vehicle will not be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. This is important because you don’t want to pay for repairs that are unnecessary. If a void warranty didn’t scare you and you choose to modify your car when it’s still under warranty, do so in a way that doesn’t compromise your security blanket. If you have questions regarding your specific car and warranty, contact your dealer to discuss the modifications you were planning and how they would or wouldn’t affect your warranty. It also doesn’t hurt if you speak to your dealer about the modifications you intend to make before purchasing a new vehicle.

Research

Once your warranty is considered, the fun can begin. Searching for car parts is a very exciting process. There are so many combinations to suit your specific tastes. My second point is that you should do your research. If you are completely new to this realm, consider consulting a professional. Search for a local performance shop in your area and work with them to hit your personalization targets. This is important because modification professionals are familiar with brands and products on the market. The last thing you want to do is to have your new modification fail. Don’t compromise the drivability of your new ride. Of course, use the internet to look for reviews. Don’t forget to use people in your real life network as well for information. Do your homework and be sure to allow the community to help guide your journey.

Buy Quality Parts

This brings me to my third point; buy quality components. After getting the green light from your manufacturer and you’ve done your homework and selected the route you want to take, be sure to buy quality parts. The last thing you want to experience is your new ride to be down due to needed repairs. To avoid this, be sure to save up and buy proven brands rather than cutting corners to save a few bucks. This path will often ensure less future repairs. You can’t pay your bills with praise about your car. Don’t end up spending more money replacing the broken, cheaper parts. Furthermore, you may want professional help with installations. I have saved lots of money doing modifications myself, but I have also ended up spending much more than I would have if I had just had the work done by a professional from the start.
